One-4-One Mentoring

Objective

Funded through the Amachi Initiative, this on-site mentorship program connects caring, consistent adults with school-aged children in a safe, supportive space to help promote positive choices for the child’s future. The program fosters positive relationships between its participants, by facilitating growth and encouraging academic success in the face of difficult family circumstances.

Description

Meeting 1-2 hours a week throughout the year, mentors and mentees have the opportunity to meet at The Door to get tutoring, relate to one another, and play games. These mentor relationships have a significant impact on mentees’ lives by reinforcing positive attitudes and behaviors, which may otherwise be discouraged by real-life situations, such as the incarceration of a parent, substance-abusing and/or absentee parents.

Mentors not only have the opportunity to connect with youth, but also fellowship with men and women with similar values working to support youth through real care and relationship support. Additionally, The Door’s One4One Mentoring program provides mentor training and technical assistance to other community organizations, as requested.

Impact

  • The program works with valued partners such as The Boys and Girls Club of Westminster and our Wildcats Football Program
  • In 2010, the program facilitated mentor relationships that served up to 60 young people
  • In 2011, the program will serve an additional 120 youth
  • The program seeks mentee and mentor referrals and activities
