Generation E4 Afterschool Program

Objective

Our afterschool program has made the change from the Science Enrichment Afterschool Program (SEAP) to the Generation E4 (Education, Enrichment, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship) Afterschool Program in order to better serve students within our community.

The goal of the Generation E4 (Gen. E4 ) is to increase our students’ proficiency in both mathematics and science.   Our hands-on, inquiry-based learning system is aligned with the Baltimore City Public School Curriculum; however, it goes beyond what students learn during the school day.  Raising our students’ scores on Maryland’s standardized tests is a priority as it is a strong indicator of their improvement.

Description

From September through May, students in grades 1 – 8 primarily enrolled at Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School, Tench Tilghman Elementary/Middle School and Patterson Park Public Charter School spend three hours a day, five days per week within our program.

In addition to proficiency in math and science, our students’ reading levels increase as a result of our curriculum.  Each day our students receive one un-interrupted hour of academic instruction, in addition to homework assistance and on-site tutoring.  Gen. E4 also focuses on the spiritual development of its students through a Christ-centered approach.  It provides students with two nutritious meals, arts and crafts activities, enriching field trips, special interest clubs, recreation, and cultural activities.  Some program components include:

  • Middle school student participation in a 9-week initiative through a partnership with Johns Hopkins University – School of Medicine focused on increasing students’ science interest via hands-on medical and science projects and exposing them to STEM-related careers
  • Student development of business plans and group operation of actual on-site business  (Entrepreneurship)
  • Engineering project assistance from Morgan State University School of Engineering college students

Impact

For 25 years, The Door has consistently met the needs of both students and their families within the community by providing students with educational support and teaching their families how to foster a positive learning environment.
